You spend your day making sure everyone else is well-fed professionally. But who is preparing the feast for your growth?
As a listener of Supervision Smorgasbord, you know that great supervision isn't just about clinical oversight; it’s about the person sitting in the supervisor's chair. This journal isn't a place for case notes or administrative "leftovers." It’s a dedicated space to sharpen your awareness, fuel your curiosity, and refine your unique supervisory voice.
We’re busy. We’re over-scheduled. But we’re also committed to excellence. This guide is your framework for high-impact reflection that fits into the "gaps" of your day. Let’s dig in.
Every prompt you receive follows a simple, two-step protocol designed for the clinical brain:
The Fresh Prompt: A targeted question designed to disrupt your autopilot and trigger a "meta-view" of your practice.
Plating the Thought: The physical act of writing (or typing) that moves an abstract thought into a concrete professional insight.
To get the most out of this process, don’t just graze on the surface. Interrogate your own process. When you engage with a prompt, look for the "Supervisor’s Shadow":
The Internal Palate: What came up for you when you read this prompt? Resistance? Excitement? A specific memory of a session?
Try something new: What do you realize you don’t know about your own supervisory style yet?
Knowledge is just the prep work. To truly "level up," we have to serve it. In every entry, identify:
The Signature Move (Intentional Action): What is one specific, tiny shift you will make in your next supervision session based on what you discovered here? (e.g., "I will wait 5 seconds longer before offering a solution.")
Taste-Testing (Modeling): How can you model the vulnerability or curiosity you found here today with your supervisees?
Sharing the Spread (teach it to others): Who in your professional circle—a peer, a mentor, or a consultation group—would benefit from discussing this specific insight?
Who’s at the Table? Think about your current caseload. Which supervisee relationship is most impacted by the insight you just had? Why them?
Make a Reservation: Growth isn't linear. Look at your calendar right now. When are you going to return to this entry to see how your "Signature Move" actually played out? (Tip: Set a 5-minute "Reflexive Review" appointment for next Friday.)
